Beowulf

Apes Pick - Beowulf

Beowulf (Unrated Director's Cut)

Why I chose this film: I remember wanting to see this ages ago when I saw previews for it in the theater. I can no longer remember what people said about this film, the acting, or the story line. So I figure my first pick might as well be an "eh what the hell" pick since I have 181 picks left!

Beeps:  I found this to be enjoyable.  The movie opens with a party scene and I did have some difficulty catching all the dialogue going on.  I assure you the rest of the movie is much clearer.  I like to think that I'm like a typical man, so when presented with a movie that has action, demons, and a mostly naked Angelina Jolie (albeit animated), I have to give it a thumbs up.  The animation was very well done, the characters were very lifelike.  I seem to remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within having the same type of animation that makes you forget that your watching an animated film.  All in all it was a good film.  Take it for what it is though, don't go into this looking for thought provoking dialogue, instead sit back and grab the popcorn.  3 1/2 stars.

Apes: After the first 5 minutes I was ready to turn this movie off, and Beeps agreed. However, I mentioned that it does defeat the purpose of the blog and year long experiment if we just skip movies we aren't loving. I am very pleased that we did not stop the movie. Beowulf ended up being an enjoyable film. The story is sad and you do feel the characters pain; which for un-empathetic me is a very different feeling. The dialogue is hard to understand but about 5 or so minutes in becomes much more clear as the movie continues. I recommend sticking with it through the dragging intro, and I think you'll enjoy this classic tale of heroes, demons, dragons, love, and tragedy. Over all I give this film 3 1/2 stars.

Overall we give this film 3 1/2 stars.

  1. I think I'd have to agree with Apes "first five minutes". I had to fight not to sleep through the entirety of it.

There were definitely parts of the movie I liked but as a generalization, I don't like movies that are animated to look like a regular film. It just bothers me, but it was well worth it for me to see John Malkovich killed. I loathe him.
